Run, photoblog, run!

Published by Joe under Graphics/Photos/Web

Joe says…
I’m obsessed with getting a photoblog to work on this site. I really like the look of Stop Design’s Photo Gallery Templates. I’ve got it up and running over here but I can’t post to the blog. There is some sort of template module issue that I believe has to do with the recent update to v3.2 of Movabletype. I’ve posted my errors and attempts to fix them on the author’s site but he’s busy having a fuckin’ life and hasn’t answered me yet. Do you have any idea how batty I go when I can’t get something to work? I won’t sleep properly tonight. I’ll be short fused with everyone I come into contact with. If I light up the local fast food joint with an AK-47 it’s not my fault.

It’ll be killer when it’s done, though. At work we’re about to start a CMS project for one of our clients (to be hosted at InMotion, of course) and we’ll be looking into things like that photo gallery. Not sure which way we’re going. InMotion has a ton of stuff pre-installed, so we’ll try all those solutions first. Joe and I will have to keep a running tally of our results here…
Dave says more…
Okay, I took a stab at using Coppermine, the gallery script available at InMotion. I couldn’t get it to accept any image uploads, so I deleted it and I’ll try again tomorrow night.
Joe quips…
I’ve tried all of the InMotion solutions and didn’t care for any of them. Your mileage may vary.
Update…
I’ve got it working. I blew out my MT installation, including the MySQL DB, deleted all the StopDesign files and directories, and then re-installed everything to the letter from the Mac binaries. The first installation was done on my PC using the windows .zip files (I use the PC because it’s hooked up to the big monitor) and has more processing power and RAM than my 15″ Powerbook. I hope to get a new iMac or G5 soon. Anyway, the gallery is up and at ‘em and I managed to figure out how to tweak the templates, CSS, and title images from the original .psd files Doug included with the download. I’m going to post a tutorial for customizing the .psd images for my own reference that anyone who decides to use these templates is obviously welcome to refer to.

Identity Crisis

Published by Dave under Minutiae

Today was an odd day for me, name-wise. I’ve had over 40 years to get used to my names, both first and last. I don’t need to be reminded of it at regular intervals as though I have a habit of misplacing it. It’s not like someone came along and told me at the age of 24 that I could go ahead and toss out the surname I’d been used to and take someone else’s. (Sorry, Jul.) So it was surreal and mildly irritating to hear a person say “Dave” to me somewhere around thirty times during a conversation today.

It was much more annoying when the Indian woman at Sprint called me Mr. K…. at the end, Mr. K….. Of every sentence, Mr. K…., and sometimes at the end of every phrase in a run-on sentence, Mr. K…., like this one. She was very happy, Mr. K…., to help me reactivate my cell phone. (mr. kuhar) I misplaced my long-suffering cell phone, Mr. K…., sometime late last week, Mr. K…., and I finally called Sprint yesterday to deactivate the phone, Mr. K….. Which virtually guaranteed that I (or my lovely wife) would find it. Which is exactly what happened. Mr. K….. When she wasn’t reciting my name, she was thanking me for the information I’d just given her, as if I’d divulged government secrets instead of simply giving her my cell phone number.

It would have at last been appropriate to whip out a sophomoric “THAT’S MY NAME, DON’T WEAR IT OUT” but I don’t think they know that old saw in Bombay.

Paradoxic on crowbait the reservoir !

Published by Dave under Minutiae

As irritating as spam is, sometimes it’s pretty damn funny. James (my office mate) and I have an ongoing Spam War: we compare the ridiculous crap that makes it through SpamAssassin and through Apple Mail’s filters. Whatever makes us laugh the most wins. Today it was the headline you see at the top of this post. More often than not it’s the porn mail written by an Indian guy who learned English from a Korean. We thought we had tweaked our filter enough to catch it, since we hadn’t seen any for a couple weeks, but they went and changed something. Maybe they thought we missed reading about the “Two bisexy gilrs and one men” or “Hunk screws his mate in batroom.” There may be someone somewhere interested in the “Hentai girl with ripe breasts,” but I really can’t see the fascination in watching cartoon porn.

PowerPoint can suck it

Published by Dave under Kvetching

Note to Microsoft: thank you SO MUCH for killing every other presentation software on the market. PowerPoint always has been a pile of shit. It’s been painfully obvious that you have no interest in making it anything more than a heftier pile of shit, and yet you did everything you could to crush the “competition.” So a big ol’ RIP to: Adobe Persuasion, Lotus Freelance, Harvard Graphics, Cricket Presents, Astound!, and the rest of the names that have faded into oblivion. Some of them were pretty crappy, of course, but Persuasion was a better program when it died eight years ago than PowerPoint is now. So bite me, Microsoft. You are a pain in the ass in all ways, and this is just a small reason why.
