My Leopard Up-to-Date dvd finally showed up so it’s up and running on my Macbook. So far so good and I’m sure we’ll chat over the coming weeks about the OS.
Two minor annoyances had to be addressed immediately. The translucent menu bar and the dock. For a menu bar “fix”, try LeoColorBar. For the dock, try the DockDoctor widget.
Don’t say I never help around here.

“Don’t say I never help around here.”
when’s the last time you washed a dish? vacuumed? did a load of laundry eh?
Oh wait. Sorry. Thought I was talking to Jack…
DOH!
Just kidding Shmoopy Bear : )
Bleech.
Anyway, so is Leopard worth it for those of us with good old regular mac use? I played with it at the Apple Store ™ the other day, and it sure is purdy. Do I really need something like Time Machine if I use Chronosync, or is that different?
(I actually stopped there to fondle the iPhones, but I’m afraid to use my thumb too much, lest Steve Jobs read my thumbprint and steal my identity. Not sure why he would want to be me, but hey, safety’s safety, right?)
Jim
I’ve only used Leopard for the past 24 hours but I’m already coming across all kinds of useful improvesments. Mouse over text in the body of an email and a date will reveal a drop down menu asking if you want to add the event to iCal. Mouse over a phone number and the drop down asks if you want to add the contact to Address Book. Quick Look is so cool and useful I can’t even begin to comment. Well, I guess I did just there.
Time Machine I haven’t had a chance to try yet, sorry, however when I plugged in a FW external drive I was asked if I wanted to use the drive for Time Machine. I didn’t.
We’ve found Quick Look to be absolutely the coolest thing about Leopard. Spaces has potential, but there are a few things that bug me. For one, I’d like to have a different desktop and dock setup for each Space. Also, I’d like to be able to have different windows open for the same app in each Space. In other words, if I’m working on two or three different projects in Illustrator, each one should be in a different Space. As it is now, all windows for a given app have to be in the same Space. Which makes no sense.
To answer Jim’s question about needing Leopard: not really, if you’re not a heavy user. Time Machine is cooler than Chronosync, and I can help you get it set up next time I’m down there. I might even be able to bring along an evaluation copy of Leopard for you.
The transparent menu bar doesn’t bother me. I keep the dock on the left side of my screen, rather than the bottom, so the goofy 3-D effect isn’t an issue for me.
