Progress

Dixie and Jack, originally uploaded by daveronku.

Dixie seems to be getting over her skittishness pretty quickly. She had her first day in the office with me yesterday and did very well.

We parked in front of the Chamber of Commerce, right around the corner from my office. The three of us went in to say hello to Stephanie, a big dog lover and a fan of Riley’s. She’s been anxious to meet the new girl. After a few minutes of tearing around checking the place out, Dixie went to Steph and made her first new friend of the day! She had a couple of treats and allowed Steph to pet her. We stayed for about 15 minutes and by the time we left she was getting full body rubs (Dixie, not Stephanie).

Next she met Steve and James, the two guys I share the office with, as well as the postal carrier and the window washer guy. It took her just a few minutes to warm up to the guys. By the time the mail came and the window was being washed, she was getting the hang of it. When the door opened, she’d bark once or twice, and both dogs would charge to the top of the stairs to see who was coming in. Riley would act all cool and race halfway down the stairs to show Dixie how it’s done. They both said hello with licks and pets. So it seems Dixie’s really taking her cues from Riley, which is great.

Last night, Jack stopped by to meet Dixie. Again, after a few minutes of shyness, she was ready to make yet another friend. As you can see from the photos, it didn’t take her long to nuzzle up to him and get all the rubbin’ she could get.

Other than a couple of accidents in the office, I’d say Dixie had a fantastic day. The vet called to say that her lab test came back; she has Giardia. That would explain some of the urgency she had yesterday. She’s not quite housebroken yet, so we still have to deal with that.

    Awwwwww.

Hey, maybe now we can get Julie to sing “Dixie Chicken” instead of “choke your chicken” eh?

If you substitute Jackie’s name for Dixie in that 4th paragraph, I think that’s how they got together.

Jim could you hear me honking all the way to your house?

Kinda reminds me of that wonderful photo you took of us on New Year’s Eve with the caption “thank God they found each other” lol lol.

Man Jack, you must be somthin’ special.
Last night we (the kids and I ) went to meet Dixie. We were there for about 20 minutes. It took her about 10-15 of those minutes to warm up to me. After several *sniff *…run back to Dave *sniff* run back to Dave, she finally decided I was o.k. And sat by me and let me pet her. It took longer for her to warm up to the kids. After about the 19th minute there she finally went by them, but only to see Julie who was between the kids. She let them pet her for a second or two and then backed away.

Oh, but she did lick Bella’s face…which probably made her day…..Bella’s day, not Dixies.

Dixie is a sweetie. I feel so bad for her. Seeing her in person and how she acts, it’s so obvious that someone abused the poor thing. She’s so afraid.

    oooh and she’s so sooooft!

We have friends that rescued a dog from a shelter a few years ago that was skittish from abuse by some dumbass guy. It’s obvious it was a man that abused her, as she is much more hesitant around men. She has grown accustomed to me since I go over to brew beer occasionally and I give her plenty of luvin’. I stopped by the other day in uniform and turnout coat and she acted like she didn’t know me again. Dixie reminds me of her(Maggie) by the stories. She wants to be friends, but it’s so difficult for these poor abused creatures to approach new people. How these ignorant dolts can do those kind of things to dogs is beyond me.
