The Death of an Analogy

by on Oct.30, 2008, under Minutiae

Back in this thread, we saw a long post comparing the way the tax code works to ten men drinking in a bar. While I thought it was overly simplistic, it turns out the story’s even better. Not only is it simplistic, it’s a hoax.

What’s really great about this refutation of the hoax is the long passage called “How Taxes Really Work” (scroll down below the text of the original hoax email), which goes a little overboard but is funny in it’s own right.

It was funny but he actually does nothing to refute the progressive tax argument — which is still true. Not good or bad, just true.

We’ve had a progressive tax for what…nearly 80 years now? The problem with the simplistic argument is that it’s too simplistic. The complicated “real world” example is over the top, sure, but it’s closer to the real world than the first example.
